| Laurie A. Amell is an attorney and registered nurse who specializes in
complex medical malpractice and personal injury litigation. She was born in Madison,
Wisconsin on January 18, 1963. She graduated cum laude from Georgetown University with a
B.S. in Nursing in 1986. Ms. Amell was a staff nurse on the Cardiac-Surgical Special Care
Unit at Georgetown University Hospital from 1986-1988 before deciding to pursue a career
in the law.
She
continued to work as a critical care nurse until 1989, while attending her first year in
law school, and rotated between the medical, surgical, cardiac, pediatric, and
neurological intensive care units at Georgetown University Hospital. Ms. Amell graduated
from George Mason University School of Law with a J.D. in 1991.
Ms. Amell is a member of the Virginia (1992), District of Columbia (1994), and Maryland
(1998) Bars; American Bar Association, Litigation Section; Fairfax Bar Association;
Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia Trial Lawyers Associations, including the
Board of Governors of DC-TLA; and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. She is the
author of "Medical Malpractice Review panels - Time to Go", The Journal of the
Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Summer 1991 and is a co-author of "Review of the
Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Act", The Journal of the
Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Winter 1991-1992.
